Just north of Angkor Wat lies Angkor Thom, about four times larger in land mass, as a moated and gated city with a temple located in the center. This temple is smaller than Angkor Wat and is more in ruins. We approached the south gate via the bridge over the moat. The width of the gate just barely allows one car to pass.as it was designed to allow one elephant thru. The balustrades on the bridge leading to the gate are figures of good spirits on the left and bad spirits on the right most of which had their heads cut off during an extended siege of the city by Thailand in the 16th century. The Khmer people were isolated inside the city gates protected by the moat and walls during the years long siege. Living inside, they were forced to survive with minimal space to grow food to sustain the population. Eventually the Thailand invaders who wanted control of the temples were defeated and the near by city was named Siem Reap, which means Siam (Thailand) killed or defeated.
