12 Places You MUST See in 2017! 10 Overrated Places to Avoid!
If you clicked to read the lists, I'm gonna have to stop you right here because this post isn't really about that. You'll have to google them. I'll wait. Oh, okay, I'll help you out. You can read some here and here, but then come back and let's talk about travel inspiration and where it comes from and how you decide where you want to spend your travel dollar and perhaps even more importantly, your travel time. I read all those lists! I devour them like fabulous word candy! But while some of that information gets into my head, I can't think of a single time that we chose a destination or avoided another because of a list. Our true inspiration comes from several sources - other travelers, bloggers, movies, books, and childhood fascinations. Today we're talking about books that inspire our travels. One of our favorite trips was inspired by the book, The Constant Princess, by Philippa Gregory which wikipedia said is "a highly fictionalized version of the life of Catherine of Aragon and her rise to power in England." So the book takes place in England, but the trip it inspired was to Granada, Spain to visit the Alhambra! The book opens with the final days of the Reconquista during which Ferdinand and Isabella conquered Granada and took over the the glorious Alhambra. I was instantly smitten! Throughout the book I kept wanting Catherine to get back to the Alhambra even though I knew she didn't, or that Philippa would move the action back there! That didn't happen either. Only one thing to do about it! Go there myself! Larry was already thinking of a trip to Spain, so in a matter of a few weeks we were off on a 9 week trip to Spain and Portugal. We spent two weeks in Granada taking in the Alhambra and Generalife and all that Granada has to offer. While you might not want to spend two weeks there, it was perfect for us and how we like to travel - slowly. We were there long enough to develop a favorite waitress in a favorite restaurant and absorb the atmosphere and energy of Granada. Small things, but they are important to us, and made us feel like we lived there - for a couple of weeks anyway! Have you ever visited a place because of a book? I was in a book club in North Little Rock, Arkansas called Have Books/Will Travel and for several summers the club traveled to places inspired by books. Did you love/do you love Lucy Maude Montgomery's Anne of Green Gables? Then maybe you've been inspired to visit Prince Edward Island, the setting of the books, like I was. LOVED it! Loved Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil like me? Then of course Savannah, Georgia's your town.
Here are a couple of bonus places. The first is inspired by both books and movies and the second by a movie.
Tell me what books or movies have inspired your travels? What else inspires your travel choices?
